Navy ships in Dawei River create fear for fisherfolk

HURFOM: From December 8th to the 11th, 2023, junta navy ships were active every day on the Dawei River, in Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division. Residents from nearby villages are worried about their safety and have stopped fishing in the river.
“Now, we’ve heard that a navy ship just left Dawei City, so some residents have run away. We had to flee from our homes for four days already. We fled, then came back and now we must flee again,” said a resident from Tha Pyay Shaung village on Dawei riverbank.
Navy ships have been more active on the Dawei River since December, 2023 and villagers alongside the riverbank dare not sleep in their villages at night. Many have fled for safer shelter.
“Before the attempted coup, we could go fishing anytime we wanted. Now the situation is different. We’re afraid of encountering navy ships during fishing. Just a few go fishing as many are afraid of the navy ships,” said a local fisherman.
