High schools in Ye Township ban students from choosing their subject combination

HURFOM: Schools across Burma opened on June 3rd, 2024 and Grade-10 students must choose one of four subject combinations for their studies.

However, some high schools in Ye Township have banned students from choosing their favorite subject combination on their own. Depending on their grade, schoolteachers are selecting the subject combination for them.

Attacks by the Junta Worsen in Southeast Burma as Civilians are Targeted

​​In the first week of June, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) reported that artillery and airstrikes by the military troops in Bilin and Thaton townships, Mon State, destroyed 12 houses, including a monastery. This information was reported by the Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee on June 6. In addition, at least fifteen residents were arrested in Kyike Hto Township from May 31 to June 5, 2024.

More than five artillery shells were fired by the 310th Artillery Battalion, causing further damage. Although civilians had to flee their homes, no injuries were reported. On June 3, the 9th Light Infantry Battalion, based in Thaton, fired artillery shells into Yay Wai village, destroying two religious buildings within the village monastery.

Explosion in a primary school killed a school boy and injures other 26 students

HURFOM: On June 4rth, 2024, an artillery shell exploded at a primary school in Eain Shay Pyin Ward, Dawei City, Tenasserim Division that killed a school boy and injured 26 other students.

Junta’s troops loot more than 100 houses and arrest a villager in Maung Mell Shaung village

HURFOM: Between June 1st to the 3rd, 2024, junta’s troops stationed themselves at Maung Mell Shaung village, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division. During their presence, the troops looted more than 100 houses and arrested a villager, according to local sources.

Children in Kyikemayaw unable to go to school due to military tensions

HURFOM: The 2024-25 academic year started on June 3rd, 2024 but just a few children in Dhammasa, Than Ka Long, Ta Ra Nar and Kyune Yaw villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State can join the government school due to the armed conflict and security concerns.

Forced relocation halts farm work in Kyikemayaw Township

HURFOM: Even though the rainy season has started, local farmers from Dhammasa, Ta Ra Nar, Kaw Swel, Than Ga Long and Kyune Yaw villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State are unable to begin their farm work as most residents have fled their villages.

“Last year, farm work preparation started in May. But we’re displaced this year so we’ve done nothing and now it is June. Those who returned home just stayed at home. They dare not go to their farm. The junta has stationed themselves and surrounded the village,” said a resident from Ta Ra Nar village.

Two plantation workers shot and killed in Ye Township

HURFOM: On June 1st, 2024, two local men from Kyone Long old village, Ye Township, Mon State were shot and killed at their rubber plantation.

U Phoe Kalar died on the spot while his friend sustained a severe injury. He was sent to Ye General Hospital but died on June 3rd.

At least ten residents arrested in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: From May 24th to the 31st, 2024, at least ten residents from Kyike Hto Township, Mon State were arrested.  Some of those are young men whose families have not been able to contact them.  Those arrested have been accused of providing financial support to the People’s Defense Force.

Four youth shot, one dead in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On May 28th, 2024, the security forces of the military junta shot four young men, and one is now dead, according to the local sources.  The young men are from Kaw Sa Nine Ward, Kyike Hto Town, Mon State.

During a patrol, junta’s forces encountered four young men having a drink in the evening in their ward. The security forces shot them and 29-year-old Ko Soe Moe Oo was shot in the neck and died.

High inflation rate of Burmese currency creates livelihood hardships for grassroots

HURFOM: Since late May, 2024, the gold price and the exchange rate for the US Dollar and Thai Baht have risen sharply resulting in a rapid drop in the value of Burmese currency.  This has created serious livelihood challenges for the grassroots.
