Schools temporarily closed after deadly air assaults

June 13, 2025

HURFOM: On June 9th, 2025, the military junta launched one of its most deadly air assaults targeting a self-reliant school in Pine Yat village.  The assault killed schoolchildren, teachers, villagers and injured many other residents.

The village is located on the border of Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State and Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.

Other deadly air attacks have targeted schools in Karn Ni, Kyauk Ye Twin, Kyike Ka Bin, Mon Line, Nwar Chan Gone and nearby villages alongside the “Gyaing” River.  Those schools have temporarily closed.

The junta targeted Pine Yat with an air assault and they launched an artillery attack on Karn Ni village. The children are frightened and their parents dare not let them go to school. So, the schools have temporarily been closed this week. I don’t know what will happen next week,” said a Karn Ne villager.

Schools in Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State have also been closed for more than a year due to heavy and constant armed conflict.

The entire community has fled so the school cannot operate. Yesterday (June 10th), about 100 junta troops advanced into and stationed themselves in the village,” said an Ah Nan Kwin resident.

Schools were operating in Well Kha Mi village, Thanbyuzayat Township; however, the military junta launched frequent artillery attacks and now parents worry about their children’s safety and security.
