Junta arrests and tortures villagers in Long Lone Township

HURFOM: On the morning of June 13, local villagers witnessed more than 40 junta troops raid and capture four men and two women from Thabyar village in Long Lone Township, Dawei District.  Residents reported those arrested were violently  tortured. 

Initially, junta troops and police entered the village on foot. Later, they came near the entrance sign of the village with three Army lorries and a civilian car, and sealed the road for inspection. After that, around 10:00 am, they entered a restaurant near the place of inspection and arrested 4 men and 2 women, including the shopkeeper. There was no reason given as to why they were arrested like this,” a 40-year-old local man recounted what he witnessed.

On World Refugee Day, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) condemns the military junta’s ongoing violence perpetrated against innocent civilians in Southeastern Burma. Since the attempted coup on 1 February, the Burma Army has escalated its combat operations in HURFOM-targeted documentation areas of southern Karen State, Mon State and the Tanintharyi Region, resulting in a wave of internally displaced people and conflict-affected refugees. Their presence and indiscriminate attacks have made it increasingly challenging for them to access food, according to field reports from the HURFOM mobile documentation team.

Junta forces farmers forced to plant rice, despite landmines: One man injured in Pu Law

In the middle of the day on June 11, a man who went down to the field west of the police station of Pala Town, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division, stepped on a landmine and was severely injured.

Locals also said he was the fifth victim injured by landmines planted behind the police station. The injured person is Ko Kyaw Lin Aung, 30+ years old, from ward No. 4.

Military gives monetary compensation to surviving family members following artillery attack in Ye Township

At 3:13 pm on June 16, 2023, the 31st local military battalion launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on Kyouk Eye (Win Ta Maw) village, Khaw Zar Sub-township, Southern Ye Township, Mon State and killed a local woman.

40-year-old Daw Htwe Kyi was cooking in her kitchen when she was hit by an artillery shell. She died on the scene and her funeral was held the same day, according to a local source.

A woman in Kaw Ka Rate seriously injured by landmine

On June 13, 2023, a 35-year-old woman from Nan Kaw Toe village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, in Karen state stepped on a landmine and suffered serious injuries to  both legs, according to a local rescue team.

Junta shoots and kills an IDP in Tha Yet Chaung Township

According to local residents, junta troops shot and killed a young man in the afternoon of June 11.  The victim was an internally displaced person (IDP) from Ya Nge village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, #Dawei District.

A junta troop of more than 100 soldiers were involved in attacks on villages such as Min Dap, Tain Kon, Ka Myaing, Ya Nge, Kyauk Kha Mauk, Kyaul Min Kon and Kanet Thiri.

Military junta arrests daughter of a gold shop owner in Kyike Hto

On June 15, 2023, the military junta arrested a daughter of U Han Tun, a gold shop owner, in Taung Thu Su Ward, Kyike Hto Town, Mon State.  She has been  accused  of supporting the Karen National Union and the People’s Defense Forces.

About 20 members of the Burmese soldiers and staff from the General Administration Department came to the gold shop and arrested the 29-year-old woman. She has been detained and interrogated at Kyike Hto Police Station, according to the local sources.

Junta arrest man after accusing him of supporting PDF

A local man from Kyout Pone village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State was arrested by the military junta at about 7 pm on June 12, 2023 after being accused of supporting the People’s  Defense Forces (PDF).

The victim is Ko Kyaw Moe and he is 45 years old.

Ko Kyaw Moe is selling goods in the village. The junta accused him of supporting PDF and arrested him. He might be arrested due to the informer,” said a Kyout Pone resident.

Junta’s artillery attacks, results in one dead, 4 injured and frightens villagers in Hnit Kayin

The junta’s 317th Artillery unit based in Wae Phae fired three weapons  at 9:30pm on June 9th targeting Hnit Kayin village. The resulting explosions killed at least one civilian,  injured 4 others and damaged two houses and a motorcycle repair shop in ward 5.  

Ko Kaung Kyi, one of those injured, was struck in the knee by an artillery shell.  Locals were frightened by the military’s attack.
