HURFOM: On November 20^th, 2024, the military junta arrested two local men, 50-year-old U Khin Oo and 38-year-old Ko Kyaw Soe, from Ye Twin Taung village, Kaw Thaung Township, Tenasserim Division while conducting the census in the village.

Weekly Analysis: Military Junta Seeks to Illegally Advance Conscription Efforts Through Bribery and Extortion

HURFOM: The 2010 People’s Military Service Law is now being enforced for the first time since it was passed over a decade ago. In February 2024, the military junta unjustly ordered mandatory military service, requiring all men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 to serve in the Myanmar Armed Forces for at least two years. The announcement met with immediate backlash and fear as young people felt apprehensive and uncertain. Nearly one year has passed since its implementation, and the impacts continue to be consequential.

In targeted areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), including Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi region, families are devastated as they have been separated from their loved ones who have been recruited to the battlefield while being forced to pay exorbitant rates of bribery and extortion to fund the conscription bid.

Local man shot and killed in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: In the morning of November 20^th, 2024, 40-year-old U Chit Ko from War Dat Kwin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State was shot and killed at a rubber plantation located at the entrance of the village.  According to the local reports, U Chit Ko was shot in the head.

Displaced villagers from Dhammasa have no plan to return home

HURFOM: On November 11^th, 2024, the Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein, and his government held a ceremony at the Sarsanar 2500 Monastery, Mawlamyine, Mon State. The purpose of the ceremony was to provide financial and material support for displaced persons from Dhammasa village, Kyikemayaw Township.

Junta arbitrarily arrests 20 young men, forces them into conscription in Paung

HURFOM: At 10 pm on November 19th, 2024, joint forces of the military junta arrested 20 young men from three “cobble production companies” in Sin Yaw village, Paung Township, Mon State and forced them into conscription.

Junta brings a charge against two young men attempting to avoid conscription

HURFOM: On November 17^th, 2024, the military junta brought charges against two young men from Mote Tama Chan village, Paung Township, Mon State who had avoided forced conscription. 

According to a source close to their families, 30-year-old Ko Chan Nyein Saw and Ko Htee Hline Win were selected to join the conscription by lottery system and then, run away to avoid the conscription.

Junta launches military operation; arrests and beats villager, robs homes in Htein Twin village

HURFOM: On November 18^th, 2024, the junta launched a military operation in Htein Twin village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.  They had arrested and beat nearly 100 villagers as well as looting valuables from residents’ homes.

Junta’s artillery attack killed young woman and injures other four residents in Dawei

HURFOM: On November 15^th, 2024, the troop of the Kaw Thu Lay Army (KTLA) entered Yaung Maw and Shin Mote Htee villages, Dawei Township, Tenasserim and at 8 pm on November 16^th, the junta’s regiment stationed at “Shwe Gu Bridge” on Dawei-Myeik Highway Road launched indiscriminate artillery attacks targeting the villages.

Six houses sealed and seized in Paung Township

HURFOM: In the first week of November, 2024, the military junta arrested six young men from Oak Tan Dar village, Paung Township, Mon State after accusing them of being members of the People’s Defense Force (PDF). Then, on November 5^th, 2024, the junta sealed and seized all six of their homes.
