Junta extorts money from oversea workers: Threatens their passport validity

HURFOM: On October 16, 2023, the military junta announced that Burmese overseas workers must show a recommendation letter from the Internal Revenue Department of the Ministry of Planning and Finance to prove they have paid their income tax before extending their passport validity.

The statement is intended for two types of passports – the passport for job (PJ) and the passport for seaman (PS).

Junta destroys two village roads creating problems in 15 villages in Bilin

HURFOM: On October 23, 2023, the 8th and 9th Light Infantry Battalions and the 314th Artillery Battalion  destroyed two roads connecting the Dough Yat, Khae Mount and Shwe Yaung Pya villages in Bilin Township, Mon State.

About 100 junta troops destroyed connecting village roads by digging a long deep trench along the roadway. The trench is 15 ft in length, 6 ft in width and 6 ft in depth.

Villager killed in armed clash near Kyone Long village

October 24, 2023

HURFOM: At about 6 am on October 20, 2023, an armed clash took place between the military junta and the joint revolutionary forces for nearly five hours in Kyone Long (new) village, Ye Township, Mon State.

The revolutionary forces attacked the military gate located at the Ye Bridge and the military responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks targeting the village, forcing residents to flee.

Junta launches operations again in Dawei Economic Zone: Torch houses and arrests villagers

HURFOM: On October 9, 2023, the military junta launched an operation in Pu Gaw Zun and La Line villages, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division and torched three houses.

On October 20, the military unit entered Muu Duu village nearby Dawei Special Economic Zone, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division and torched another 16 houses.

Nearly 700 houses burnt down by the junta:  Residents are far from returning home

HURFOM: From January to September, 2023, the military junta burnt down more than 670 houses in Tenasserim Division and tens of thousands of residents had to flee from their homes, stated FE5 Tanintharyi, an independent research team based in Tenasserim.

The military junta are looting abandoned houses, burning down houses, arresting villagers and using them as human shields.

Villagers cannot apply for bank loan due to incomplete ownership documents

HURFOM: Citizens have the right to apply for a loan from particular banks but the rural population in Mon State has lost that right due to incomplete ownership documents, reported locals to HURFOM.

“If you owned a car or a house or a plantation and you had a complete/official ownership document. You can apply for a loan from the bank. But in rural areas, most villagers don’t have complete documents so they can’t apply for a loan,” said an agent from KBZ bank in Mawlamyine.
