Junta’s soldiers rape local women in Tenasserim

HURFOM: Since December 17^th, 2024, the military junta has launched military operations in Yebyu, Htone Khar, Chaung Hnit Pauk and Thane Khun villages alongside Tenasserim – Maw Taung Motorway in Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division.  This has included intense battles against the resistance forces.

Local woman injured by junta’s artillery attack in Thane Za Yet

HURFOM: At 4 pm on the Independence Day, January 4^th, 2025, the Thane Za Yet based 310^th artillery regiment targeted War Dat Kwin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State.  There were no armed clashes in the area, and the attack injured a local woman.

Frequent landmine explosions frighten local villagers in Zar D

HURFOM: During the third week of December, 2024, the military junta launched an operation near Zar D village, Kan Bauk region, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.  Villagers experienced frequent landmine explosions and suffered casualties after the retreat of the regiment.

Ten residents who criticized arbitrary arrests for conscription, subsequently arrested in Thaton

HURFOM: On December 28th, 2024, ten residents including a ward Administrator from Thu Wunna Wati Town, Thaton Township, Mon State were arrested by the military junta for criticizing the junta for conducting arbitrary arrests to collect conscripts.

Monthly Overview: A Devastating Year for Civilians in Burma as Displacement Soars amid a Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

As 2024 ends, documentation by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) indicates an ongoing deterioration of human rights in Burma. In the target areas of Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi region, civilians continue to face a barrage of threats to their safety and well-being, including ongoing indiscriminate firing, where women, children, and the elderly are among those who have been killed and wounded.

Arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, landmines, gender violence and destruction of properties are among the many crimes perpetrated by the military junta. Throughout the year, HURFOM released a series of reports spotlighting various areas of concern, including the impacts of the junta’s deeply flawed forced conscription enforcement, the gendered implications of the conflict through the Voice Up series as well as weekly and monthly updates that provided context on the alarming erosion of human rights in HURFOM areas.

Junta arrests and extorts traders in Tenasserim

HURFOM: On December 3^rd, 2024, the 557^th light infantry battalion arrested four local traders of food and goods who transported rice from Tenasserim Town to Ta Ku village, Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division.  They demanded ten million MMK for the release of each individual arrested.

Junta Implements Cybersecurity Law with Severe Penalties for VPN Use and Online Infractions

On January 1, the junta officially enacted Cybersecurity Law No. 1/2025 under Article 419 of the Constitution. The law comprises 16 chapters and 88 articles outlining severe penalties for unauthorized VPN use and various online offences, including fines and imprisonment.

The law mandates penalties of up to six months in prison and fines of up to 20 million kyats for those caught using VPNs without approval. It also includes penalties for cybercrimes such as online fraud, illegal gambling, and unauthorized financial transactions, with prison sentences ranging from two to seven years and significant fines.

The junta claims the law aims to protect national stability and authority by preventing cyberattacks and ensuring control over digital spaces. However, local legal experts and rights groups have raised concerns that the law primarily targets free expression and access to information.

Local authority ignores rise of theft and robbery cases in Ye

HURFOM: In 2024, theft and robbery cases were on the rise in wards in Ye Town, Ye Township, Mon State but an appropriate response from the local authority and the police forces was lacking.

On December 19^th, 2024, a house in Thiri Nadar Ward, Ye Town was burgled.  A motorbike, two million in cash, a water pump, wire cable, an iron door and other valuable things were stolen.

Junta extorts big business owners to commemorate 150th anniversary of Thanbyuzayat Town

HURFOM: December, 2024 is the 150^th anniversary of the establishment of Thanbyuzayat Town, Mon State and the military junta is planning to celebrate with a 3-day festival that will run from December 27th to the 30th.

The junta is expected to allocate hundreds of millions of MMK for the anniversary festival and is extorting money from the local big business owners.

Junta arrests young men: Extorts and forces them to join army

HURFOM: In recent months, the number of disappearances of young people in Mon State has been on the rise.  Most have been arbitrarily arrested by the military junta.
