Military operation in Tha Yet Chaung forces 2,000 villagers to flee home

HURFOM : On January 14th, 2024, more than 100 military junta troops launched an operation in Tha Yet Chaung Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division forcing more than 2,000 villagers to flee their homes.

The military regiment entered Kyauk Ne Maw village, Long Lone Township on January 13th and then, on January 14th, they entered Ka Net Thiri, Kat Yat and Kywe Min Gone village tracts at midnight.

Those villages are seaside villages so the villagers had to run away mainly by boats. They had to flee quickly,” said a resident.

Ka Net Thiri village has a population of 1,449 and 510 people from Kat Yat and Kywe Min Gone villages also had to flee.

They’ve been patrolling in the village since the morning of January 19th. There has been no arrest yet. Previously, they usually stationed themselves at Kyaung Gyi but now they stay at four different places. Some villagers still live in the villages,” said a resident of Nyaung Zin village.

As of January 19th, 2024, the regiment was still based in Yan Taung, Oak Tu, Thin Gyune, and Tha Yet Hna Kwa.  The regiment destroyed and burnt down seven houses in Oak Tu village.
