HURFOM: Beginning on December 1st, 2023, the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army engaged in heavy fighting in Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State.
The armed clashes have forced residents from Maung Ma Yaw Tit, Kaw Nwe, Yaw Tan Shay, An Pha Gyi and Noe Phoe village tracts, in the township and about 26 villages alongside Asia Highway Road, all to flee their homes.
“The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has increased. All the ways have been blocked – IPDs are urgently in need of food and medical care,” said a social worker providing assistance in an IDP camp.
Elderly persons, pregnant women and children remain stuck in the villages and rescue teams from Hpa-An, Kyone Doe and Myawaddy are attempting to relocate them to a safe place.
“The battle is still ongoing. The military junta has been launching air assaults. Some villagers are stuck in the villages,” said a local source from Kaw Ka Rate Township.
During the Kaw Ka Rate armed clash, 11 people were killed and many were injured by the military’s air assaults.
