Number of donors declines due to arrest of Dr. Aung Nine Oo

HURFOM: On April 10th, 2024, the military junta arrested Dr. Aung Nine Oo, the former deputy Speaker of the Mon State Parliament.  The doctor had been providing support to displaced persons from Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. The arrest has frightened away other donors and social workers who are now avoiding visiting displaced persons’ and are unwilling to provide in person support.

After Dr Aung Nine Oo was arrested, social workers who help displaced persons dare not do their work openly. They fear visiting the displaced persons and even though they have provided support to displaced persons, they don’t share their activity on social media,” said a social worker.

The junta has accused social workers of having contact with the resistance forces and has arrested them. Emergency and rescue teams are now not providing their services freely.

Now, it’s getting difficult to help displaced persons. The displaced persons who have taken shelter in monasteries face fewer problems, but those hiding in caves and forest are in a worrying situation,” said a displaced person.

The military junta has reinforced their troop numbers and have conducted a “clearance operation” in Kyikemayaw Township. As a result, the number of displaced persons has increased and they are urgently in need of food and medicine.

The displaced persons in Ba Lue Island and Mawlamyine are okay but it is difficult to send food and items to displaced persons in the caves nearby villages,” said a social worker.

Besides air and artillery attacks, the military junta has arrested and killed local villagers during their operation forcing nearly 10,000 of residents from Kyikemayaw Township flee their homes.
