Resident killed by unexploded ordnance in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: On May 14th, 2024, unexploded ordnance dropped by the military junta killed a man from Ward 2 of Kaw Ka Rate town, in Karen State.
50-year-old U Tun Tun Aye, had just returned after fleeing his home, which had been subject to an artillery attack. While cleaning debris with a shovel from around his house, he struck and exploded a leftover artillery shell.
“He had just come back to his home. When cleaning bushes in his compound, he hit a leftover unexploded artillery shell. He died on the spot,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.
Once the military junta regained control of Kaw Ka Rate Town in April, 2024, some residents returned to their homes.
According to an April report released by UNICEF, 1,052 civilians across Burma have been killed or injured by the explosion of landmine or explosive munitions.
