Displaced persons from Kyikemayaw and Kaw Ka Rate face food and shelter problems in rainy season

HURFOM: The battle between the military junta and the joint forces of the New Mon State Party (AD – Anti Dictatorship) and its alliances have been intensifying in Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State and in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.

The fighting has forced residents to flee their homes. As the rainy season approaches, displaced persons face food and shelter problems, according to social workers.

In addition, fighting in Kaw Thut, Kaw Zwell, Ta Ra Nar and Tan Ka Loung villages forced local villagers to flee their homes for nearly a month.

“I have enough food before the rainy season. But we’ll face both food and shelter problems when the rain falls. Because they have to take shelter in other places, they have many difficulties,” said a Mudon resident helping displaced persons.

Most displaced persons from Kyikemayaw and Kaw Ka Rate Townships have taken shelter in monasteries. The monks, local organizations and private donors are helping with food and shelter support.

There has been no sign of the end of armed clashes in the townships and displaced persons are unable to return home. The arrival of the rainy season is adding to the hardship.

“As time passes, we worry we’ll get fewer donors. We have to totally rely on the donors for food and shelter and we’ll have problems immediately, when the number of donors declines,” said a social worker.

Due to the battle between the military junta and the joint forces of the NMSP (AD) and its alliances in Kyikemayaw and Kaw Ka Rate, more than 10,000 villagers fled their homes. The numbers of civilian injuries, casualties, and houses damaged, are also increasing every day.
