Junta arrests villagers, uses them as human shields in Thaton

HURFOM: On February 11th, 2024, a military regiment entered Htone Bo Gyi village, Thaton Township, Mon State and arrested local villagers to use them as human shield, residents told HURFOM.
The 409th Light Infantry Battalion based in Wi Yaw, Thaton Township entered Htone Bo Gyi and arrested 40-year-old Saw Phoe Thet, 50-year-old Saw Maung Pa and 63-year-old U Aung San, a Htone Bo Lay villager.
“All the other villagers ran away when the regiment entered the village. They arrested three villagers who had remained to guard their houses,” said a Htone Bo Gyi resident.
The three men were released on February 12th and the regiment is now stationed around Htone Bo Gyi village, according to local sources.
“There was no beating or torture. They just used them as human shields,” said the resident.
Residents from nearby four villages including Htone Bo Gyi and Htone Bo Lay villages fled their homes and have been unable to return due to the military presence.
