Two armed robbers in military uniform rob local shop in Kyarinnseikyi

HURFOM: On January 15th, 2025, two armed robbers dressed in military uniform robbed a shop in Ka Lie Ga Ne village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State.  The village is under the control of the New Mon State Party.  The robbers arrived on motorbike and robbed the shop run by U Tun Oo.

Blind, elderly woman injured by artillery attack in Yebyu

HURFOM: On January 15th, 2025, the military junta launched artillery attacks on Nat Kwin and nearby villages, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.  The attack injured a blind elderly woman.  There have been no active armed clashes in the area.

Landmines Pose Growing Risk to the Safety and Security of Civilians in Southeastern Burma

Landmine detonations have caused deaths and injuries for many civilians in Burma. They are hidden and are often discovered before it is too late, causing extreme pain and trauma to victims. Since the attempted coup, there has been a significant rise in landmine incidents in Burma. According to UNICEF, 32% of landmine casualties in early 2024 were children.

In target areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), including Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi region, the presence of landmines has hindered civilian livelihoods and daily lives.

On January 1st, a displaced man from Chaung Hna Pauk village, Tenasserim Township, attempted to return home but was killed by a landmine explosion. The victim, 40-year-old U Zaw Min, and another unknown villager were walking towards their village when they stepped on a landmine.  The body of U Zaw Min was cremated on January 2nd, 2025.

Ongoing armed conflict creates food shortages in Ye: 600 villagers displaced

HURFOM: Since January 9th, 2024, there has been ongoing and heavy armed conflict between the military junta and the local resistance forces in Kyone Long (old) village, Ye Township, Mon State.

The military junta has blocked the way to reach the “Ye Chaung Phyar” area which is a safe zone for displaced villagers.

Nearly 3,000 displaced villagers face shortage of food in Long Lone

HURFOM: In the third week of December, 2024, an armed clash between the military junta and the joint armed revolutionary forces broke out in Long Lone Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division.  As a result, nearly 3,000 local villagers from six villages including Kyauk Ni Maw, Za Lut, Kyauk Wat Pyin and Ball Pyin villages had to flee their homes.

Students face difficult to take final exams as schools closed by armed conflict

HURFOM: In 2024-25 academic year, Grade 4, 6, 7 and 8 have to take their final exams from February 20 to 25, 2025 while Grade 5 and 9 will take final exam from March 3 to 8, 2025. Grade 10 and 11 will take final exam from February 20 to 27, 2025.
