Resident killed by unexploded ordnance in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: On May 14th, 2024, unexploded ordnance dropped by the military junta killed a man from Ward 2 of Kaw Ka Rate town, in Karen State.
50-year-old U Tun Tun Aye, had just returned after fleeing his home, which had been subject to an artillery attack. While cleaning debris with a shovel from around his house, he struck and exploded a leftover artillery shell.

HURFOM, Third Week of May 2024
The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) is deeply concerned over the escalation of attacks by the Burma Army against civilians in the Tanintharyi region. In the last week alone, aerial and ground attacks increased in Yebyu and Tha Yat Chaung, which forced more than 100 people to flee, including pregnant women and children.
In areas like Kanet Thiri, Gone Nyin Sate, Thae Lan, Chaung Wa Pyin, Sone Sin, and Se Taw, where revolutionary forces are fighting to take control, the junta has launched marine and air strikes, forcing thousands of residents to flee.
Five villages flee from junta’s artillery attack in Bilin

HURFOM: Since May 6th, 2024, the military junta has been launching indiscriminate artillery attacks on villages in Bilin Township, Mon State, forcing more than 2,000 residents from five villages to flee their homes.
The 314th Bilin based artillery regiment launched artillery attacks on the villages of Shwe Yaung Pya, Kha Loud Inn, Ma Yan Gone, Mi Gyaung Eye and Ah Won Gyi which are under the control of the Karen National Union. Villagers had to hide in nearby forests, mountains and plantations.

HURFOM: May 22nd, 2024 is the full moon day of Warso month in the Burmese calendar year with Buddhists typically celebrating the festival of “watering “Bodhi” banyan tree”. The military junta is now pressuring residents of every village in Chaung Zone Township, Mon State to celebrate the festive event.
Junta appointed Administrators have been planning to organize music, and dance shows that include gambling events during the festivals. Their objective is to ensure large crowds attend.

HURFOM: On May 11th, 2024, the Karen National Union (KNU) arrested three young men from Thar Yar Mon village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division, after accusing them of using drugs.
16-year-old Maung Zar Lin, 22-year-old Maung Zar Ni Oo and 22-year-old Ko Aung Saw were arrested at their home. The KNU said family members must pay one million MMK each for their release.

HURFOM: On May 15th, 2024, the military junta launched an indiscriminate artillery attack on Zar De village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division that killed two teenage siblings.
The junta claimed that members of the People’s Defense Forces were hiding near Zar De village. Despite the fact that there were no armed clashes in the area, the junta forces intentionally launched an indiscriminate artillery attack on the village.

Over 6,000 people from Tanintharyi Township urgently need support as they flee ongoing attacks by the Burma Army. Residents of villages, including Thain Daw, Yay Pu, as well as in Yebyu and Tha Yat Chaung Townships, have been displaced since the escalation of conflict in December 2023, which was triggered by air strikes by the junta. The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) is deeply concerned about the increase in forced displacement, especially as the military escalates its targeting of the most vulnerable. We condemn the attacks by the terrorist regime, which have resulted in the fear and isolation of the affected groups.

HURFOM: On May 11th, 2024, the military junta targeted Down Yet village, Bilin Township, Mon State with multiple indiscriminate artillery attacks that injured eight residents including a seven-year-old child.
The 314th artillery regiment based in Zee Win, Bilin Township launched 12, 120mm artillery attacks on the village.

HURFOM: On May 3rd, 2024, the junta’s navy base in Ka Lar Gote Island, Lamine Sub-township, Ye Township, Mon State was attacked by resistance forces.
After the attack, the junta imposed a curfew banning people from going outside from 8 pm to 4 am in Kaw Dut, Ka Doe Sake, Hnit Ka Yin, Da Min Sake, Tha Pyay Yaw Thit and Car Sake villages which are within the Lamine Sub-township. Additionally, junta-appointed village Administrators threatened that plantation workers and visitors who failed to file visitor’s reports would be severely punished.

HURFOM: On May 13th, 2024, the resistance forces launched an attack on the “Eain Shay Pyin” military check-point in Dawei City, Tenasserim Division.
A battle between the two sides followed, and the junta arrested two local men and launched an artillery attack on the village injuring two villagers and damaging two houses.
