Abducted for Forced Marriage: Family fights for return of daughter after being abducted by ex-administrator’s son two weeks ago

WCRP: On August 6^th, a 33-year-old woman was abducted by her ex-boyfriend in Karot Pi village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State. She has been missing for two weeks.

On the day she was abducted, the teacher went to the Education Office in Thanbyuzayat to apply for a job teaching middle school, and once she left the office premises, she saw her ex-boyfriend Mg Khin Maung Htwe, who was waiting outside the office for her in a white truck. Read more

Over 200 locals join protest march calling for the shutdown of antimony factories in Mon State

WCRP: On July 22^nd 2018, over 200 people who live near the Mawlamyine industrial zone in Mon State joined a protest march calling for the shutdown of two antimony factories. The protesters said the factories’ air pollution is affecting locals’ health.

U Zaw Zaw Han, spokesperson for the demonstration, said locals had sent numerous letters to the Mon State government about the bad smell from the factories, but because nothing has happened the locals are protesting, calling on the government to shut down the factories. The protesters collected signatures during the protest, and they will send them to the president in ten days. Read more

On August 8^th 2018, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) interviewed Mi A— of Pa Nga village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State. Her land was repeatedly confiscated by Burma Army Artillery Battalion No. 315 between 2004 and 2008. Read more

Family of man killed by Captain Aung Ko Ko Min from LIB #587 still waiting for answers after almost 3 months

It has been almost three months since Captain Aung Ko Ko Min from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) #587 shot and killed U Tin Soe Myint, a villager from Kalagoke Island, Lamine Town, Ye Township, Mon State. However, the victim’s family has yet to receive confirmation of the perpetrator’s arrest and has had little communication regarding the case from either the military or the Mon State government. HURFOM donates humanitarian aid to the thousands affected by flooding in Kyaikmayaw Township

On August 7^th 2018, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) visited Mae Ga Row, Ni Ton, Kwan Ngie, and Ma Ka Sam villages of Pyar Taung (Doe Sai) Region, Kyaikmayaw Township, Mon State and provided humanitarian aid  to the flood victims in those villages. Read more

HURFOM report shows worrying trend in sexual violence against children in Mon State and Mon areas of southern Burma

HURFOM’s Women and Child Rights Project (WCRP) releases: ‘“A Girl’s Life was Destroyed”: Sexual violence against children continues to rise in Mon State and Mon areas of southern Burma’. The report documents 14 cases of sexual violence against children, including 11 cases of child rape, which have occurred since June 2017 in Mon State and Mon areas of southern Burma..” [Download Full Report] Read more

Locals refuse to pay electricity fees in protest at Bedok Construction Company breaching its agreement

HURFOM: Bedok Construction and Engineering Company’s 24-hour electricity project in Northern Ye Township, Mon State began to operate on April 7^th 2018. On July 8^th, when the company came to collect the fees for residential power consumption, locals found that the fees were higher than what they had previously agreed. Furious, local villagers have protested by refusing to pay the fees.

This incident is the latest in a string of disputes between the company and villagers. In May 2018, local farmers petitioned the Mon State Parliament to force Bedok Company to remove electricity poles from their land, which the company had constructed without compensating the farmers. In June 2018, villagers reported that the company failed to properly fix village roads after the company’s trucks had destroyed them. Read more

850 Dengue Fever Cases and 3 Deaths in Mon State Since Start of Rainy Season

WCRP: In 2018, ten townships in Mon State have reported 850 cases of dengue fever during the rainy season so far, and three children have died of the illness, according to the Mon State Public Health Department.

The three children who died of dengue fever are a nine-year-old from Thanbyuzayat Township, an eight-month-old from Paung Township, and a 16-year-old from Thaton Township. Read more

16-year-old girl raped by her cousin’s brother in Ye Township

WCRP: On July 6^th 2018, a 16-year-old girl from Daminkone Kyar Tan quarter, A Sin village tract, Ye Township, Mon State, was raped by the 20-year-old brother of her cousin.

Daw Lwin Thidar, the girl’s boss, explained, “On July 6^th, while the victim was working in Kaung Son store in Aung Thukha quarter, Ye Town, the perpetrator and a 25-year-old friend of his came to the store and asked the store owner to take her to Ye Hospital where the perpetrator’s mother is getting treatment. So the victim followed the perpetrator and his friend by motorbike to the Ye Hospital.” Read more

NMSP claims their land use application aims to halt land grabs by investment companies, but locals see it differently

HURFOM: The New Mon State Party (NMSP) has been applying for permission to use land in the Parlain Region of Andin village tract, Kun Khari Island, and Man Gyi, Dani Dagyar, and Kaw Hlyne villages in southern Ye Township. Nai Win Hla, head of the Home Affairs Department of the NMSP, claims that the NMSP’s application for land use is aimed at halting land grabs by investment companies who want to exploit local natural resources.
