Kyone Pyaw Residents Refuse to Comply with Unlawful Demand from the Local Military

On October 9, 2014 local army base Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 586 demanded that thirty-six plantation owners in Kyone Pyaw Village, Ye Township, Mon State provide the base with rubber seedlings. The plantation owners were dissatisfied with the demands, and reported the event to Ye-based civil society groups and networks, according to a plantation owner who reported the incident to HURFOM, under the condition of anonymity. Border Government School Teachers Dissatisfied with their Salaries

Government school teachers in Three Pagoda Pass, Kyar Inn Seik Kyi Township, Karen State, argue that officers appointed to provide teachers with security and a sufficient salary are failing to do so.
Teachers on the border find it difficult to live on the salary they are provided, especially since they are not allowed to tutor students outside classroom hours in order to supplement their income, as other districts allow. Read more
Government Collective Security Team Arrests NMSP Member

A member of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) was arrested this Monday, October 6th, by a government collective security team at the junction of Ye, Pa-Nga, and Thanbyuzayat. The collective security group, which includes members of the police, military and township administration, were conducting their duties at the checkpoint when they arrested Nai Htaw Pop, a township-level member of the NMSP, in Thanbyuzayat Township at 10 am. The team seized a 45 caliber pistol, 12 bullets, a bomb, and handcuffs off Nai Htaw Pop’s person; Nai Htaw Pop was later released. Read more
Yaung Daung Youth Escaped from a Dramatic Arrest, Later Detained by Police

On October 3, 2014, Kamarwat Town police chased Mehm Chan Chan through Yaung Daung Village, Mudon Township in attempts to arrest him. The police instilled great fear in Mehm Chan Chan, a member of the Yaung Daung Youth Organization, as they chased him while fully equipped with weapons, but Mehm Chan Chan was able to avoid arrest. Four Khawzar Town Residents Remain Held Hostage by Unknown Armed Group

An unknown Mon armed group kidnapped five residents from Khawzar Town, Ye Township, Mon State last Friday, September 19th, and have demanded a 750 thousand kyat ransom for their hostages. Pa-Nga residents reclaim land they lost to local army units

In 2004, Artillery Regiment No. 315, led by Lt. Colonel Tint Nine, seized roughly 250 acres of rubber plantation in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, leaving the victims unemployed and forced to endure hardship in earning a livelihood. Most of the land seized belonged to Pa-Nga residents, and during an interview with HURFOM, victims expressed a strong desire to get their land back. Read more

YSS Collect Signatures in Opposition to Coal-Fired Power Plant

On August 23, 2014 the Ye Social Society (YSS) began collecting signatures from local residents in opposition to the coal-fired power plant, which is planned to be built in Ain Din Village, Ye Township, Mon State.
After holding discussions with local residents living throughout potentially affected areas, the YSS began its campaign to collect signatures from local residents in opposition to the project; the YSS will collect signatures until the end of September. Read more
