Local man steps on landmine and lost his leg in Karen State

HURFOM: At about 6 pm on July 29th, 2025, a 40-year-old local man from Yaw Thit Pine Ward, Hline Bwel Town, Hpa-An District, Karen State stepped on a landmine and sustained severe injury by the landmine explosion, according to local sources and emergency and rescue team.

Saw Kyall Sue stepped on landmine while going to toilet behind his house. He had a serious injury at his left foot and had to amputate his lower leg.

Saw Kyall Sue’s house is located very close to the junta’s military base. There are notice letters about landmine in the area. But we can’t see anything when the streets are flooded. His house was flooded so he went outside to go to toilet and stepped on landmine,” said a member of local emergency and rescue team.

Currently, Saw Kyall Sue has been received treatment at the Hpa-An General Hospital.

When the area is flooded, explosives flow with the water current. We can’t see what is under water. This incident creates lots of worry among us,” said a local man.

During the seven months of 2025, there have been 15 landmine explosions in Mon, Karen and Tenasserim areas and the explosions killed four residents and injured 29 other villagers, according to the data collected by HURFOM.
