A weekly update by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) on the situation on the ground. Summary data includes Mon State, Karen State and Tanintharyi region.

As the conflict intensifies across Burma, civilians in the Southeastern part of the country also continue to face immense threats to their safety. Women and children are among the most vulnerable who have been routinely displaced. Their security is not guaranteed in IDP camps or temporary shelters as military aircraft can be heard circling above with the possibility of an attack imminent. There is trauma and widespread uncertainty as families struggle to cope amidst worsening circumstances.

Junta’s plan of “forming local militia group’ fails

HURFOM: The military junta’s plans to form local militia groups in villages in Mon State has not gone according to plan.

According to sources close to the Mon State military council, the project failed due to villages choosing to make no contribution to the initiative.

Commodity prices double in Chaung Hna Kwa due to prolonged fighting

HURFOM: Heavy armed clashes between the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army have been ongoing since November 10, 2023. The battle is taking place in the Chaung Hna Kaw area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State.

Ten houses looted and burnt after two military units invade Long Lone

November 17, 2023

HURFOM: Between November 8th to the 13th, 2023, two military regiments invaded Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division and burnt down approximately ten houses in the township. The regiments also looted valuables from the homes, according to the local sources.

HURFOM: Since November 10, 2023, there has been a heavy armed clash between the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army in the Chaung Hna Kwa area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State.

One killed and two injured by junta’s indiscriminate artillery attacks in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On November 13, 2023, an artillery explosion took place at a farm near Chaung Wa village, Kyike Hto Township, in Mon State killing a local farmer and injuring two others, reported local sources.  The dead man was U Min Nine, a 54-year-old farmer.

Number of IDPs doubles within nine months in Tenasserim Division

HURFOM: The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tenasserim Division, Southern Burma has doubled within nine months, from January to September, 2023, and as of October 5th, now exceeds 45,000, stated FE5 Tanintharyi, a group of a group of local news media and researchers.

HURFOM: In Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division, the junta’s check-point personnel and village Administrators have been extorting villagers and abusing their power, local people reported HURFOM.

Junta threatens to burn down entire village

November 15, 2023

HURFOM: On November 12, 2023, revolutionary forces were active around Taung Ka Lya and Mell Ta Yoe villages, Kyikemayaw Township, in Mon State. In response, the military junta threatened to burn down the whole village,  if the revolutionary forces entered the villages again.

Gasoline shortage creates tough livelihood for taxi drivers in Mawlamyine

HURFOM: Since the second week of November, 2023, the gasoline shortage in Mawlamyine, Mon State, has been making it more difficult for taxi drivers to make a living.

The military junta restricted the movement of trucks at the Nyaung Khar Shay X-ray Check-point on the Rangoon-Mawlamyine Highway, as a result fuel transport trucks cannot reach their destination in time, creating the gasoline shortage.
