Junta burns down houses in Maung Mell Shaung a second time

HURFOM: On August 5th, 2024, the military junta entered Maung Mell Shaung village, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division and again burnt down residential houses, according to local sources.

Since early July, the 302^nd artillery regiment based in Za Yar village has frequently launched military operations targeting Maung Mell Shaung village, and the troops have stationed themselves in residential houses.

Junta checking household lists & take photo record of young men in Ye

HURFOM: Since the end of July, 2024, the military junta have been examining household list documents in Maw Ka Nin village, Ye Township, Mon State.  They have also been taking photos of young men during the check, according to local residents.

The junta has been conducting door-to-door checks in Car Sake and Kaw Swell Ward, Maw Ka Nin village at 5 pm every day.

Flood victims in Tenasserim in urgent need of food, medicine and shelter

HURFOM: Since July 21st, 2024, there has been heavy and continuous rain in Tenasserim Township, Myeik District, Tenasserim Division. Many villages in the township have flooded. The “Twelve Lat Nyi Nyi” Displaced Persons Assistance Group said the flood victims urgently needed food, medicine and shelter.

On July 31st, the water level of the Tenasserim River rose to a record setting 31 feet.  Ban Law, Ta Ku, Thara Bwin, Thane Naw, Kaw Ma Pyin, Lell Thit, Thara Phone, Pa Wa, Maw Tone and other villages of Tenasserim Division have suffered from severe flood.

Long Lone PDF beats an elderly woman with bamboo stick

HURFOM: On July 19th, 2024, an elderly woman from Tha Bot Sake village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division was beaten with a bamboo stick by the Long Lone People’s Defense Force.

The PDF accused the woman and her husband of supporting the military-backed political party – Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and expelled them from their house in December, 2023.

Mawlamyine experiences severe shortage of gasoline

HURFOM: Since February 1, 2021 the military junta has totally controlled the trade of the US Dollar currency. Despite this control, the junta has failed to sell enough US Dollars to business persons to import gasoline. The result is frequent gasoline shortages across Burma.

During the six months, between January to July 2024, Mon State experienced at least three periods of severe gasoline shortages.  The capital city, Mawlamyine, which has the biggest population in Mon State, has suffered the most.

Kyike Kaw Administrator’s house sealed and seized

HURFOM: On August 1st, 2024, a joint team of police forces and officials from different government departments sealed and seized the house owned by the Ward Administrator of Kyike Kaw Ward, Thu Wunna Wati Town, Thaton Township, Mon State.

Administrator U Aye Soe, had been arrested in the second week of July after being accused of having connection with the People’s Defense Force. He was charged under the Anti-Terrorist Act sections 50(j) and 52(a).

Eight civilians, including one child, die in floods

HURFOM: Since the third week of July, 2024, there has been heavy and continuous rain in Mon and Karen State followed by widespread flooding. Eight residents including a child died by drowning in the flood, according to rescue organizations.

As of July 20, three local men from Mon State and a child and four local men from Karen State died of drowning in the flooding.

Flooding in Southeastern Burma Adds to Daily Challenges for Locals

HURFOM: Now, more than halfway through the year, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) continues to report worrying increases in the widespread crimes being perpetrated against innocent civilians by the junta. By the end of July, HURFOM’s June monthly overview numbers had doubled. The reported figures are as follows: 107 people were arbitrarily arrested, 52 were injured, 110 were mistreated, and nearly 60 were killed. In addition, 75,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to violence by the junta as they intensified their offensives in local areas, with 120 homes damaged in July alone.

After being armed by junta, local militia group extorts money from villagers

HURFOM: On July 24th, 2024, the Mawlamyine based Southeast Military Command armed a local militia group led by Nine Lin Oo. The group is based in R Yu Taung village, Ye Township, and claimed it needed weapons and ammunition to maintain security in the area.

The R Yu Taung militia group has been active in R Yu Taung, Hnin Zone, Kwan Du, Sone Nat Thar, Hman Sein and Set Twelve villages.

Aid to flood victims prevented due to presence of military regiment

HURFOM: Flooding has occurred in the community of Kaw Bane and nearby villages, in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.  Emergency and aid groups cannot reach the area due to the presence of the military regiments.

“All houses in Bell Zu Ward, Kaw Bane village are flooded. But the military regiment stationed themselves in the area so no aid group dares come to provide support. There are no individual donors or aid organizations in the area,” said a Kaw Bane resident.
