HURFOM: On February 12th, 2024, 40-year-old Daw Myint was on her way to her workplace at a rubber plantation near Kyar Inn village when she stepped on a landmine. She sustained injuries to one foot and lost the other.
Day Myint is from Pan Taw village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tenasserim Division.
“Her foot was totally cut off. She has been sent to the Dawei General Hospital for treatment. When the People’s Defense Force came to remove the landmines at noon, they found four other landmines,” said a local villager.
The locals said the landmines were planted by the military junta who had commenced operations in the area. In the third week of January, the junta launched military operations in Nyaung Zin, Kyar Inn, Kyet Sar Pyin, Pan Taw and Tha Yel Taung villages.
“It looks like the landmine planted by the military junta. Now, no villager dare to go to their plantation,” said a Nyaung Zin resident.
According to the 2023 report by the Landmine & Cluster Munition Monitor more than 1,300 people have been injured or killed by the landmine explosion since the attempted coup on February 1st, 2021.
