Persistent armed clashes in Kaw Ka Rate force 40,000 residents to flee homes

HURFOM: The armed clashes in Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State which started on November 30th, 2023, continues up to today, forcing more than 40,000 residents from 30 nearby villages to flee from their homes.
The junta launched military attacks in an effort to take back control of the Kaw Ka Rate – Myawaddy Asia Highway, and on January 8th engaged in a battle with the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army.
“There is no permanent refugee camp for the villagers and they have had to flee their homes for a long time, so food and shelter are in urgent need. They are also in urgent need of medicine,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.
The villagers fled to Mawlamyine, Kyone Doe, Eain Du, Na Bu, Kam Ma Yite, Kam Ne, Thar Ma Nya and the Hpa-An area.
More than 20 civilians were killed in the Kaw Ka Rate armed clash and some residents died due to a lack of medical treatment, resulting from the curfew imposed by the junta.
The junta has now cut off the telecommunication network serving the area around Kaw Ka Rate Town.
