Villagers prevented from leaving Kyikemayaw: Support needed

November 21, 2023

HURFOM: An ongoing and fierce battle between the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army has been ongoing since November 10, 2023, in the Chaung Hna Kwa area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State.

More than 3,500 residents from ten villages have fled their homes.  However, the military junta has blocked the roads preventing them from fleeing to safety, leaving many stuck in their village or in the forest.

Those who have been stopped by the military and those stuck in the villages are in need of food. The armed groups are also in the villages so they cannot go anywhere. They have to eat what they have. If the situation continues like this, the hardships will be getting bigger,” said one resident.

Many villagers are hiding in the nearby forest and mountains, or at rubber plantations and monasteries. They are also in need of help.  Some villagers are using jungle routes for transportation.

Everything is difficult, because we have had to run away from home. Now the winter is coming and it’s very cold in the morning. Many elderly persons and children have coughs and colds. We’ve needed blankets and sweaters,” said another resident.
