HURFOM: In September, 2023, at least four police forces, informers and militia members of the military junta were shot and killed in Paung Township, Mon State.
Following these killings, the junta arrested many residents and imposed movement restriction in the township.
On October 1, 2023, the Paung Township General Administration Department (GAD) issued a local order banning two men from riding the same motorbike.
“Yesterday(October 1), they announced with loudspeakers in wards and villages. If two men ride the same motorbike, they’ll be punished. It has caused difficulties for everyone,” said a Paung resident.
The restriction has a huge impact on motorcycle taxi drivers and rubber plantation workers and limits the free movement of local people.
“Now people don’t hire motorcycle taxis very much. We’ve only gotten two or three passengers a day. Now we can’t let men at the rear so our livelihood is getting tougher,” said a motorcycle taxi driver.
The Bilin, Kyike Hto and Ye Township GAD have also issued local orders banning two men riding a same motorcycle.
