Threat of armed clashes keep students from returning to school

October 17, 2025

HURFOM: Beginning in early August, 2025, residents from ten villages alongside the Ka Lane Aung – Ma Hwelve Taung Highway Road, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division fled their homes due to frequent armed clashes, repeated military advances and indiscriminate artillery attacks.

Schools in the village had to be closed as students fled with their parents.

On October 13th, 2025 schools were re-opened, however only a few students have been able to return.

Our school had 300 students before but now only 250 students have returned. Although we are operating the school again, we are in a constant state of fear. Armed clashes can break out again any time … we feel insecure. Parents worry about their children’s safety,” said a schoolteacher.

Students are reluctant to rejoin their school due to security concerns and displacement, local villagers told HURFOM.

According to the data collected by HURFOM, only 60 students from Thar Yar Mon village, 30 students from Yar Phu Yaw Thit village and 50 students from 60-Mile village have returned to schools.

I want my children to be educated. But armed clashes can break out any time so I don’t let them join the school. They’re unsafe,” said one parent.

Tens of thousands of residents from ten villages alongside the Ka Lane Aung – Ma Hwelve Taung Highway Road had to flee in early August, 2025 and returned on September 20th.
