HURFOM: In the morning of June 16, 2023, a young woman from Tin Kan Taw village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division was arrested by the Mawrawaddy Navy Command for sharing Min Aung Hlaing’s picture on her Facebook account.
The daughter of the Thel Chaung Village Administrator saw the post, and showed it to her father. The Administrator then accompanied by soldiers, went to the 19-year old’s home and arrested her.
“She was taken to the Thel Chaung Administration Office. The reason for the arrest was not clear but the authorities said the fact that an ordinary civilian shared the picture of “the State leader” is inappropriate. The Navy Commander beat her during the interrogation. No one is allowed to post Min Aung Hlaing’s Photo on social media or save the photo in a mobile phone,” said a villager close to the victim.
On June 20, the Thel Chaung Administrator threatened Mi Thel to sign a confession letter and to pay 50 million Kyat for her release. Her family has not disclosed any details about the incident.
According to the local sources, at least ten people have been arrested in Thel Chaung village for keeping Min Aung Hlaing’s picture in their phones. Some of them were released after paying a certain amount of money to authorities.
