The junta’s 317th Artillery unit based in Wae Phae fired three weapons at 9:30pm on June 9th targeting Hnit Kayin village. The resulting explosions killed at least one civilian, injured 4 others and damaged two houses and a motorcycle repair shop in ward 5.
Ko Kaung Kyi, one of those injured, was struck in the knee by an artillery shell. Locals were frightened by the military’s attack.
The junta’s attack included repeated weapons fire, and warplanes flying over the village. Many residents from ward 4, 5, and 6 have sought shelter at the monastery and some moved to Mawlamyine.
“There are reports that PDF groups hide in the forest near ward 5. Due to these reports, the junta council fired artillery weapons at the village again. One person was injured when the artillery shell was fired at the village.” said one resident.
The junta’s artillery attack is believed to have been retaliatory to an incident that took place on June 8 at around 8:30 in the morning. That morning an armed group of approximately 20 persons entered Hnit Kayin village and arrested 47-year-old U Nay Win Myint, who was the village Administrator selected by the junta.
