Ye residents face more restrictions with martial law
February 10, 2023
HURFOM: On February 2, 2023, the military junta announced that Ye Township, in Mon State would be ruled under martial law. The Burmese military’s South East Command is now in control of the township.
Shortly after the imposition of martial law the junta moved troops into Ye Town.
“There have been military movements in Ye Town. The junta has employed more troops at the check-points. Security is getting tougher,” said one resident.
Travel restrictions, and even bans on carrying food/rice and medicine on motorbikes have come into force. The army is controlling the movement of the people and the Ye Township General Administration re-issued an order banning residents from going outside from 6 pm to 6 am.
“We can’t go to the plantation in the morning and we can’t go outside at night. We can’t move freely so there is a negative impact on our business,” said another resident.
There are criticisms directed at the junta not only because of the restrictions and the impacts on people’s daily lives and businesses, but also because elections are to be held in every constituency in the township.
“The military council will hold elections in Ye Township at any cost. That’s why they’ve imposed martial law in the township. The military has lost a battle (against the revolution forces) in Ye Township also,” commented one Ye resident.
