26 stores destroyed as junta reclaims land
February 8, 2023
HURFOM: The military junta has reclaimed State-owned land plots on U Sit Maung Street, Myine Thar Yar Ward, Mawlamyine, in Mon State. Twenty six stores that were built on the land plots were recently removed and destroyed.
The store owners are facing difficulties in finding new space to rent or have anything rebuilt in another location.
“We were instructed to move out on February 2 at the latest, so we obeyed the instruction. We haven’t found a new place yet. We do not have the financial capital to hire or build a new store at the moment. It is getting tougher now,” said one store owner.
The store owners stayed on the State-owned land with a two-year contract paying 30,000 to 50,000 Kyat per month in rent.
“The contract included the fact that we had to move out when they (the government) reclaim the land. We were ordered to move out for the first time before the outbreak of COVID-19. But we refused to obey, because there was no official approval from the government. But now we can’t resist the military junta,” said one displaced store owner.
The land plots that were reclaimed are in the project area for the new airport construction project being led by the military junta.
