Junta’s administrators disrupt “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”

HURFOM: November 25 to December 10 marks the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign organized by women in Mon State.
This is an annual initiative, but an activist involved in the effort told HURFOM that the junta-appointed Administrators in some villages of Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State have been actively disrupting the campaign this year.
“This year, we had chosen three places in Thanbyuzayat (to mark the event of “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”). One place was at Thanbyuzayat Town and another two were in villages. When we had informed the Administrator about the event, he replied that we needed a recommendation letter from the upper authority to celebrate the event. So we had to give up our plan. I think the rights of the women in the villages were violated (by the junta),” said one woman activist.
Both COVID-19 and the political crisis in Burma has left women in Mon State experiencing more gender based violence, poor health, in addition to deleterious impacts on their social networks and personal security.
