MUP EC affirms decision of CEC to join the military council
March 17, 2021
HURFOM: On March 15, 2021, the emergency meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Mon Unity Party (MUP) affirmed the February-6 decision of the Central Executive Committee (EC) to join the military council. The meeting took place in Thanbyuzayat, Mon State.
Earlier this month the MUP decided to accept a Union-level post proposed by the military council. That decision divided the unity of the Mon community and led to the resignation of MUP members from the party. A favoured Mon politician, Dr Aung Naing Oo also resigned from the CEC.
The controversy forced the MUP to hold an emergency meeting of the EC to reconsider the decision of joining the military council. Two thirds of the 90 person EC voted in favor of the CEC decision.
The MUP had chosen Dr Banyar Aung Moe to occupy the seat at the military council but as of today, there has been no official announcement of this appointment.
The MUP Joint Secretary, Nai Layi Tama has agreed to serve as a member from Mon State to the military council.
