Junta forcible collects household list documents in downtown Mawlamyine

January 27, 2025

HURFOM: Since the third week of January, 2025, the junta-controlled ward administration team has been collecting copies of household list documents in downtown wards in Mawlamyine, Mon State.

Each household must give two copies of household list documents and the junta’s team has forcibly been collecting this information in a door-to-door campaign in Maung Ngan, Zay Kyo, Mu Pon and other downtown wards.

Local residents reported to HURFOM that the administration team threatened that they must provide the documents and pay for copies to be made.  They were also told that refusal to comply would result in consequences.

The junta already conducted a nationwide census in October, 2024, but without explanation are forcefully collecting copies of household list documents again.

Local residents see this as an abnormal development and are concerned the junta will use the information to commit electoral fraud and to collect conscripts for military service.

They already conducted a census from every house. Now, they’ve collected copies (of household lists) again. People think they will commit electoral fraud. On the other hand, they want to know the number of men in the ward (to collect them as conscripts). But all the data and information are already in the immigration office. We don’t know why they’re collecting the copies,” said a local man.

Mawlamyine, the capital of the Mon State, is under full control of the military junta and the junta has tightened security in the city.
