HURFOM: On November 24th, 2024, a local man sustained a serious injury from a landmine explosion at the Phar Pon – Ka Ma Maung Road, Phar Pon Township, Karen State.

The man, his wife and son were returning from Mawlamyine to Bot Kyoe Lell village, Phar Pon Township by motorbike, when they ran over a landmine.

The father sustained serious injuries to his face and thigh.

His injuries are serious so he has been moved from the Ka Ma Maung Hospital to the Hpa-An Hospital. The doctor has advised him to go to Yangon because they can’t provide proper treatment due to insufficient equipment and medicine. But he has a financial hardship to go to Yangon,” said a local source.

The wife and son suffered minor shrapnel injuries and were admitted to the Ka Ma Maung Hospital, by a local rescue team. They were also subsequently moved to the Hpa-An Hospital.

The military junta, the Border Guard Force (BGF) and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) are active in the area where the explosion took place, but no one knows which group is responsible for planting the landmine.

In order to limit the transportation of the military junta, the KNLA has limited movement and travel on the Phar Pon – Ka Ma Maung Road since 2022.
