HURFOM: Since early August, 2024, the military junta has launched operations in villages in Northern Ye Township, Mon State, and villagers reported to HURFOM that junta troops have been torturing and extorting money from the residents.
At about 8 pm one evening in August, a local man from Lamine Sub-township returning to his home was interrogated by junta troops and was slapped in the face
“None of the villagers were aware that lots of soldiers had reached the middle of the village that night. They stationed themselves at the junction and came out when they heard the sound of a motorbike. They didn’t target women but they interrogated men. That night, an intoxicated man argued with the soldiers and he was slapped in his face. Now, everyone in the village lives with fear,” said a local villager from Lamine Sub-township, Northern Ye Township.
The soldiers have been checking the mobile phones of local pedestrians and extorting money from them, according to a resident from Maw Ka Nin village.
“I was collecting my “items” at “Maw Ka Nin Bus Station” and wasn’t aware that soldiers were arriving with military trucks. They pointed at me from the back with guns and ordered me to give my phone. They checked my phone and demanded 50,000 MMK. I only had 20,000 MMK and I was about to cry as I trembled with fear. They took my 20,000 MMK and went away,” said a local woman.
At the moment, the military junta has been deploying a large number of troops to launch operations in Ye and Thanbyuzayat Township. The troops have stationed themselves at the school, monastery, religious buildings and entrance junction of villages forcing some local villagers to flee their homes.
