August 7, 2024

HURFOM: Since July 21st, 2024, there has been heavy and continuous rain in Tenasserim Township, Myeik District, Tenasserim Division. Many villages in the township have flooded. The “Twelve Lat Nyi Nyi” Displaced Persons Assistance Group said the flood victims urgently needed food, medicine and shelter.

On July 31st, the water level of the Tenasserim River rose to a record setting 31 feet.  Ban Law, Ta Ku, Thara Bwin, Thane Naw, Kaw Ma Pyin, Lell Thit, Thara Phone, Pa Wa, Maw Tone and other villages of Tenasserim Division have suffered from severe flood.

On August 2, the water level dropped to 20 ft but all our food was lost in the flood. Now, we’ve urgently needed shelter, food and medicine,” said a member of the group.

Despite flooding, the military junta launched an air assault on Lell Thit village on July 30th. Then, they entered the village and stationed themselves in the village.

On August 2nd, there was an armed clash nearby Lell Thit village and the military junta burnt down and destroyed four houses.

Social workers and villagers are unable to transport food and other needed items in the area due to the military operation and the presence of troops in the villages.

Before the attempted coup, there were lots of community-based organizations and donors when we suffered from the flood. Now, the commodity prices have skyrocketed and the junta has been launching military operations so we can’t prepare for the flood,” said a flood victim from Tenasserim Township.
