Eight civilians, including one child, die in floods

HURFOM: Since the third week of July, 2024, there has been heavy and continuous rain in Mon and Karen State followed by widespread flooding. Eight residents including a child died by drowning in the flood, according to rescue organizations.
As of July 20, three local men from Mon State and a child and four local men from Karen State died of drowning in the flooding.
On July 27, a 50-year-old man from Bilin Town slipped and fell into floodwaters and died of drowning. Also, a 60-year-old man from the 3rd Kan Nyi Naung Street, Out Kyin Wrad, Thaton Town died by drowning while going to his farm.
According to the Maw Ka Nin Charity Group on July 28, a 50-year-old man from Yaw Thar Yar village, Maw Ka Nin village tract, Ye Township died of drowning on the way to his farm.
“The rain doesn’t stop in Mon State. All the low land is flooded and the motor ways are under water. The children and the elderly people must be careful during the flood. All the persons who died of drowning in flood in Mon State are elderly persons,” said a resident from Ye Township.
On July 26th and 27th, there was a flood in Myawaddy Town, Karen State and a three-year-old child and three local men who were in their 50s were drawn into the water flow and died of drowning.
An elderly man, who was inebriated, died of drowning during the flood in Hpa An Township.
At the moment, most villages in Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State are flooded and residents are in urgent need of food, clean water and medicine. Many townships in Mon and Karen State have flooded leaving ten thousands of residents as flood victims.
