HURFOM: On October 9, 2023, a military unit entered and established a station in Kyauk Ka Nyar village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division causing villagers to run away for their safety.

About 20 soldiers of the 406th and 407th Light Infantry Battalion from Taline Yar entered Kyauk Ka Nyar via jungle route and took up station in an abandoned house in the village.

They encountered about 30 villagers hiding in the forest and arrested them. After they reached the village, they released the villagers,” said a Kyauk Ka Nyar villager.

Only elderly people are left in the village and most of the young villagers fled.

The soldiers have banned villagers from going to the forest so we’ve stayed here, now living in fear,” said one resident.

On October 7th  and 8th, the Air Force Regiment in Kyauk Ka Nyar arrested 24 villagers and they have not yet been released. Villagers do not know their whereabouts.

The air force regiment also arrested villagers in August. Some had to pay a ransom for their release. Some were jailed. Now, they’ve made an arrest again and some previous victims were arrested again,” said one young man.
