HURFOM: On October 1, 2023, the military junta started conducting a census in Mawlamyine and Kyikemayaw Townships, Mon State, according to local sources.

The junta informed us to stay at home when they came to conduct the census. If not, we must go to the ward administration office and explain why,” said a local villager from Kyikemayaw Township.

The pilot project to conduct a census will be started in 20 townships across Burma from October 1 to 15, 2023. The census teams will use mobile tablets and a “CAPI” system to collect people’s information, stated the military junta.

The census will  be conducted door-to-door in Mawlamyine Township but local people have to go to the ward administration office and provide their information in Kyikemayaw Township.

The census team has also included staff from the education department and rural health department. Soldiers are providing security to the census teams,  but they aren’t in a full military uniform,” said a resident from Mawlamyine Township.

According to multiple sources, the military junta finished conducting the census in three wards in Mawlamyine Township and two wards in Kyikemayaw Township.

The census is expected to be completed by October 15, 2023, stated the military junta.
