Thefts increase in Ye Township:  No response from authorities

August 9, 2023

HURFOM: The military junta announced martial law in Ye Township Mon State in June 2022 and restricted movement at night. Despite these measures, there has been an increase in thefts, according to the locals.

People are not allowed to go outside after 8 pm. But it looks like thieves can go outside at that time. Now, even wire cable is stolen. But there is no action. Most thieves and drug abusers were released under the terms of the amnesty,” said a local from Ye Township.

Local people had arrested some thieves and sent them to the local police station for further action but the thieves were released three days later without any consequences

Now, it’s the time to harvest fruits. We dare not stay and work at our plantation. We’re allowed to go to our plantation only after 6 am. What we can do now is just sleep at our home,” said a villager.

Since the attempted coup, the military junta restricted going to plantations and also has implemented rigorous checks on transporting food, medicine, and cosmetics, according to local sources.
