Detainees released after paying a ransom

HURFOM: On June 19th and 20th , 2023, six villagers from Phaung Taw village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division were arrested by the Mawrawaddy Navy Command after being accused of having links with the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and contributing to the “Flower Strike”.
All the detainees were released on June 30, 2023 after paying a ransom.
“They were sent back to their homes by a navy car. Their village Administrators negotiated with the Navy Command for their release after paying (a certain amount of) ransom. But family members of the detainees said nothing about the payment,” said a villager from Phaung Taw village.
