HURFOM: On June 25, 2023, the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) attacked the police station in Hnit Kayin village, Ye Township, Mon State. After the attack, a military unit entered and established a base in the village.
On June 30 and July 1, 2023, the military unit arrested 15 villagers accusing them of having contact with the PDF.
“The arrested villagers range in age from 20-40 years old. Those arrested include both young men and women. They’re just ordinary villagers who make their living on plantations and working with livestock,” said a resident.
On July 2, two young men and three women were released but the others remain in detention. Some detainees were arrested and remained at the Hnit Kayin monastery, and some were transferred to Thanbyuzayat Police Station.
“They’re charged under the Anti-terrorism Act section #52(A). The family members are allowed to bring food to the monastery but not allowed to meet with the detainees. Those arrested in the Thanbyuzayat Police Station are also not allowed to meet with the family members,” said a source.
With the military now stationed in the village and following the arrests, Hnit Kayin residents have started to move to Ye and Mawlamyine.
