Worries increase as junta imposed martial law in Ye Township
February 10, 2023
HURFOM: Since the coup, armed clashes between the military junta and the revolution forces have increased on a daily basis in Ye Township, Mon State.
On February 2, 2023, the military council declared that martial law would be imposed on Ye Township. Residents are now worried there will be even more armed clashes in the area.
“Ye Township has the Karen, Burmese and Mon armies. These joint forces attack the Burmese army very often. Even with martial law, the revolutionary forces won’t reduce their momentum. They will fight more I think. So there will be more and more armed clashes,” said a political analyst in Southern Ye Township.
On February 2, 2023, the junta called a National Defense and Security Council meeting and declared that absolute power was granted to the Commander-in-Chief for next six months.
“Before declaring martial law in our region (Ye Township), the junta arrested people as they liked. They beat innocent people, seized motorbikes and even killed villagers. But now they’ve declared martial law, so there will be more human rights violations,” said a member of Ye Township Mon Unity Party (MUP).
The military junta has imposed martial law in 37 townships.
The townships of Ye, Kyarinnseikyi, and Kaw Ka Rate located in Karen State are mostly inhabited by Mon people
“Declaring martial law means waging more war,” concluded the political analyst.
