CDM government staff struggle to find employment: Worry about their security

HURFOM: After the coup, many government staff from various departments were involved in the “Civil Disobedience Movement” (CDM).

Now, these staff are struggling to find a new job. They are unable to find other employment as employers do not want to target their companies as being in opposition to the military.

In addition, they worry the military may arrest them at any time.

“I’m a CDM member and a school teacher, so the private school doesn’t appoint me. They (the private school owners) dare not give me a full-time job because they don’t want to mess with the military. But one of the private school owners pities me and gives me a part-time job,” said one school teacher.

It has been more than a year since the coup, and many CDM members who were government workers remain unemployed.

“I can’t offer in person instruction due to COVID-19 restrictions. To open an online class isn’t okay either, as the military junta frequently cuts off the Internet. My parents have fed me so I haven’t died of starvation,” said another CDM member and former school teacher.

The military is targeting CDM members who were government staff and arresting them.

“(When the authorities came to) my house to check “visitors”, I’m frightened. When they asked about my job, I just answered that I’m jobless,” said another CDM member and former school teacher.

According to a local source, there were more than 4,000 former government staff in Mon State.
