HURFOM: The military coup has now passed the one year mark and villagers report to HURFOM that there has been an escalation of stealing and robbery under the military junta’s rule. People feel the rule of law or even the appearance of uploading the law is rapidly disappearing.
Most townships in Mon State have experienced a variety of thefts. Those responsible for these crimes are doing some without fear of consequences , report the villagers.
“Motorbikes are stolen under our noses. It happens everywhere. In our township, motorbikes were stolen nearly every day,” said a man from the General Administration Department of Mudon Township.
Theft of motorbikes occur in Mawlamyine, Mudon and Ye Townships and often take place even in broad daylight.
The authorities are not interested or unable to handle these crimes, the number of robberies has been increasing on a daily basis.
“I wanted to go shopping and parked my motorbike in front of the central market. It was taken in broad daylight. I saw my motorbike being taken away but I could do nothing. I chased after the thief but failed to catch him. I reported to the authorities but nothing has changed. I’ve heard nothing about the whereabouts of my motorbike,” said a resident from Thanbyuzayat Township.
The robberies also include stealing fruits from the plantations, reported the villagers in Ye Township.
“I can’t neglect my betel nut plantation even for a second. Bundles of betel nuts were stolen. If the betel nuts were too high to harvest, the thieves chopped down the whole betel nut tree (and took the nuts). They were never caught. Reporting to the village authorities does nothing,” said a betel nut plantation owner from Southern Ye Township.
In order to secure the security of villages and wards in Mon State, soldiers and security forces have been patrolling both day and night, but the number of motorbikes and fruits being stolen remains high.
According to the reports by the local news agencies, the number of thefts has been escalating in other big cities across Burma.
