New registration system creates problems for university students pursuing distance education

February 11, 2025

HURFOM: In the 2025-26 academic year, university students enrolled in distance education programs may only apply for their registration online, however the new online system has too many steps and complexities which create problems and confusion for the university students.

As of today, no student has applied for his/her registration form. There are too many steps and we can’t make any mistakes with our information. I haven’t applied for my registration now. I’m going to just wait and see,” said one university student of distance education.

The junta’s Ministry of Education is working in cooperation with the UAB bank and the Ministry requires university students taking the distance education option to complete their applications online and they must use UAB pay to pay their registration fees.

This year’s procedure is to apply for a registration form on the website of the Ministry of Education. Then, the payment can only be made using UAB Pay. One student can only have one account so each student must open their bank account at the UAB bank. Last year the registration fee was 40,000 MMK but this year, it now costs 90,000 MMK,” said another university student.

The applicant must have a UAB bank account.  This creates problems for any students currently working abroad.

I had requested my friend to apply on my behalf in previous years. I would then return when the university was about to open. Now, I can apply online but to make the payment, I must have a UAB account. That means I must return now. It cost me a lot to go back and there have been frequent armed clashes on my way home. It isn’t okay to go back,” said one university student who is working abroad.

The students in some areas have slow and poor internet connections so it takes too long to fill in the registration form.

Our internet connection is very bad so we have to wait for a long time to fill in the registration form,” said another university student.

Parents are worried that the military junta has created a new university registration system that might be connected with the public conscription law, and enables the junta to conscript their children.
