HURFOM: On November 11th, 2024, the Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein, and his government held a ceremony at the Sarsanar 2500 Monastery, Mawlamyine, Mon State. The purpose of the ceremony was to provide financial and material support for displaced persons from Dhammasa village, Kyikemayaw Township.
The military junta urged residents to return to their homes but villagers have no plan to return because there is no safety and stability in their area.
“We still hear gunshots in the “Gyaing River area. It isn’t peaceful. We have no plan to go back and build a good house. We’ve just built a small hut to have a temporary stay when we go back to the village. We don’t build a good house even if we have money. We fear recurrence,” said a Dhammasa villager.
The military junta provided 200 million MMK for house construction; 30 million MMK for monastery construction and 20 million MMK for food for 5,000 people.
“We’ve heard that they were giving this money for return and re-settlement. They just gave it to the village Administrators. The money hasn’t reached our hand yet,” said a resident.
The local residents have no trust in the military junta, so rather than going back home, they decided to settle in urban areas or flee to Thailand.
“The soldiers are stationed in the village and launching indiscriminate attacks. They’re also checking the pedestrians. The villagers do not trust them so they have moved to the cities or fled to Thailand,” said a local villager.
On March 27th, 2024, the military junta used aircrafts and navy ships to attack Dhammasa village. The attack burnt down and destroyed more than 400 houses and forced ten thousands of residents to flee home.
