HURFOM: On October 17th, 2024, an elderly political prisoner who was serving his prison term in the Dawei Prison, Tenasserim Division died, according to an October 20th statement issued by the Dawei District Network for Political Prisoners.
62-year-old U Ye Aung aka U Chin from Ward #5, Ohm Pin Kwin village, Yebyu Township was sentenced to ten-years imprisonment in the Dawei Prison. He succumbed to a stroke on September 27th.
He was admitted to the Dawei General Hospital and died on October 17th.
“It’s very cold in the prison and he suffered from a stroke. His wife left the village after his arrest. There was no contact from his family members, the prison authority cremated his body on October 18th,” said a local source.
At the moment, the Dawei Prison has more than 460 political prisoners and they do not have sufficient health care in the prison.
“Now, another political prisoner in the Dawei Prison is suffering from a stroke,” said a source close to the political prisoners’ community.
Political prisoners have the right to have medical treatment outside the prison but they have to pay money to the prison authority to access healthcare services. The prison authority threatens family members and extorts money from them in such cases.
“They phoned me and asked me to send money. As I was worrying about my son, I sent the money as they asked for. However, not all things we sent to the prisoners reached them,” said a family member of a political prisoner.
Since the attempted coup on February 1st, 2021, more than 100 political prisoners across Burma have been killed or died in the prison due to extreme torture, sexual assault and insufficient or belated access to health care.
