Junta forces arrest four villagers: Uses them as human shield

HURFOM: On July 13th, 2024, the military junta launched a military operation targeting villages in Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tenasserim Division. Four villagers including a 16-year-old child were arrested and used as a human shield.

Beginning July 11th, the regiment consisting of about 200 troops moved through Sin Ku, Sin Kyan and Chauk Chaung villages, which are beside the Dawei-Myeik Highway Road.

“They did not use the highway road. They came via a jungle route. Sin Yan village is located beside a jungle route and they arrested four villagers from that village. A 16-year-old child was amongst those arrested. Their parents are crying in agony,” said a Sin Kyan resident.

The regiment stationed themselves in the Sin Ku village monastery for two days and then moved to the fire brigade in Sone Sin Phyar village. From there they launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on nearby villages.

“I did not hear of an active armed clash, but they’ve been launching artillery attacks targeting the village. Because they are constantly launching military operations at the moment, I do not think they will release the villagers they arrested,” said a Sone Sin Phyar resident.

Residents from five villages in the Township have fled from their homes.
