Four villagers arrested by junta’s troops found dead: Another four remain missing

HURFOM: On July 1st, 2024, a junta regiment arrested eight residents as part of a military operation that took place in the Dawei Special Economic Zone near Zar D village, Kan Bauk village track, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.

On July 3rd, 2024, the dead body of 39-year-old Ko Nine Nine from Khaung Pyan village, Zar D village track was found in a nearby stream.

On July 4rth, 2024, the dead bodies of 55-year-old Ko Thar Thar aka U Line Yar, 60-year-old U Kyaw Sein and 45-year-old U Aung Zaw Win — all from Zar D village were found in the same stream, according to a local woman.

Firstly, the dead body of Ko Nine Nine was found in Khaung Pyan stream. His clothes were attached to the tree which led villagers to find the body. Three other bodies were found at noon on the next day. There were many injuries on all four bodies indicating the victims were tortured,” said the woman.

Numerous cut wounds were found and some of the victims were beheaded. Their hands were tied with iron rope at their backs.

They were brutally tortured. There were a lot of wounds. We cremated the remains in the cemetery at the west part of Khaung Pyan village. It was not possible to transport the bodies back to the village,” said a source close to the family members.

The remaining four villagers from Zar D, Khuang Pyan and Khway Ma Phaw villages have still been detained by the junta’s troops but there is no trace of them. Family members are worried about their lives and safety.
