HURFOM: In Mawlamyine, the Capital of the Mon State, soldiers and police forces are stopping young men at road junctions. Then, the security forces accuse them of “being on the list for “compulsory military service” and arrest them.

We’ve heard they are arresting young men. But we don’t know exactly who was arrested. After being arrested, the young men are sent to a military camp in Mon Cultural Museum,” said a Mawlamyine resident.

Family members have to pay a certain amount of ransom for the release of these detainees.  Those unable to pay a ransom become candidates for the 2nd batch for “compulsory military service”.

All detainees are very young. Young boys go outside at night. If you cannot pay the amount of money they demand, you have to join the military service,” said a local source.

Batch 1 of has already been trained at the 4rth Advanced Military Training School at Thanbyuzayat Township and more than 200 young men from Mudon, Chaung Zone, Paung and Thanbyuzayat Townships have been forcefully detained and trained in the camp.

The whole building in the training school is protected by an electric fence. It looks like they worry about trainees running away from the school,” said a local source from Thanbyuzayat Township.
